How To Choose The Right Material Handling Conveyor For Your Business
Material handling conveyor design varies considerably from application to application. Although the fundamental purpose is the same, there are always individual characteristics of your operation which will make one type of conveyor more suitable than another. Conveyors can provide you with a significant savings in both time and expense, once they have been installed. In many industrial applications, it is possible to reduce the time delay between one piece of work and the next to effective zero, and in doing so free up the time of your skilled workers for more productive endeavors.
Material handling conveyors are found in many industrial, construction and even retail situations. The most obvious one which we all see regularly is in the supermarket, where every till is equipped with a very basic conveyor belt. Basic it may be, but the operation of these belts is a significant factor in the profitability of these retail operations. When the till operator has finished processing one batch of items, the next batch will already have arrived. This concept can be applied to so many processes in manufacture and warehousing.
The simple conveyor belt we see in the supermarket is still usable in other situations, but there are many variations on this. Conveyors built on a roller system are extremely common, and have advantages over the belt driven system. The rollers allow for easy maintenance, and even the possibility of keeping the conveyor running at a time when there is a mechanical fault. An individual roller can be easily replaced, or can even be absent and the unit will still be able to function.
The type of material which your material handling conveyor will be transporting is the most important determining factor in which system will be most suitable for you. Another factor is the height at which the operations will take place. The most economical types of material handling conveyors are the ones which use gravity to transport items, usually over rollers. Although these are the most economical to run, they are not the easiest to install unless you already have an area in your building which is naturally designed for them.
Material handling conveyors have even been adapted for use in outdoor construction to carry sand, dirt and construction materials either over distance or height. The way these dirt conveyors operate is to have a series of buckets on a thin metal frame. These buckets hang loose, ensuring that their cargo is upright no matter what the angle of the carrying frame. This is what allows them to transport material up steep inclines to structures at a higher level. This is specialist equipment, and can be rented if you only need it for a short time. They operate completely differently from most types of indoor material handling conveyor.
